Step 1 - Line up the decimal points vertically. Fill in any 0's where necessary....\nIn this math video we will learn how to subtract rational numbers that are decimals. We will begin by review how to subtract decimals using 3 easy steps. Step 1 - Line up the decimal points vertically. Fill in any 0's where necessary. Step 2 - Add or subtract the numbers as if they were whole numbers. Step 3 - Place the decimal point in the sum or difference so that it lines up vertically with the numbers being added or subtracted. I will model an example and provide a student practice problem to review subtracting decimals. We will then learn the Rewrite as Addition Rule as we move into subtracting rational numbers in decimal form. The rule states - To subtract rational numbers, keep the first number the same, change the subtraction sign to addition, and change the sign of the second number to its opposite. We will also review Same Sign Rule and Different Sign Rules to use with addition. I will model this using a graphic organizer and by modeling using steps.
