A protein complex identifies the mismatch, excises a section of the newly synthesized DNA strand, and then DNA polymerase fills in the correct nucleotides, with DNA ligase sealing the gap. In bacteria, strand discrimination is based on methylation, while in eukaryotes, it relies on nicks in the newly synthesized DNA to distinguish it from the template strand.\n
