Though he didn’t realize it at the time, DeJardin's radical experiment deeply shaped his path. He split the class into two groups: a control group that learned through traditional methods like textbooks and tests, and an experimental group—Brands' group—that was simply given a stack of historical novels and biographies to read over the year. There were few formal assignments; the main goal was to spark an interest in history. For Brands, it worked. He became fascinated by the real people behind historical events and learned to see the world through their eyes—a skill he later came to describe as the historian’s “superpower.”\n
