Although Greenberg didn’t see himself as a natural newspaper reporter like Woodward, he learned invaluable lessons about writing, interviewing, and especially how to craft a book. He assisted Woodward on The Agenda, a book about the first year of the Clinton administration, often working out of Woodward’s home office. What stood out most to Greenberg was Woodward’s incredible work ethic—starting early, working late, and exemplifying the idea that there’s no substitute for time spent digging into a subject. Woodward often said, “time against the problem,” meaning persistent, thorough research yields the best insights. Greenberg also came to appreciate Woodward’s idea that “all the best stuff comes at the end” of a book project—when the writer finally has the full picture in mind and knows what to ask and where to dig. These principles deeply influenced Greenberg’s own approach, especially while writing his biography of John Lewis.\n
