This attractive force continues to dominate until the atoms reach an optimal distance, known as the bond length, where the molecule is at its lowest energy. However, as the atoms get even closer, the repulsive forces between the electron clouds and the positively charged nuclei begin to increase, causing the potential energy to rise again. The curve shows a balanced interaction between attraction and repulsion, with the lowest point representing the most stable bond configuration.
