Eyewitnesses described the creature as large, with wings and glowing red eyes, often seen near cars. Over the course of a year, more than a hundred sightings were reported, leading to mass hysteria and local hunts for the creature, including various theories about what type of creature Mothman could be. The tragic Silver Bridge collapse in December 1967, which some people associated with Mothman, end the wave of sightings in West Virginia.
