Oxygen has eight electrons, so its configuration would be 1s² 2s² 2p⁴. This means that the 1s and 2s orbitals are filled up first, and then the 2p orbitals are partially filled up.\r\u003cbr/\u003eNot always:\r\u003cbr/\u003e\r\u003cbr/\u003eThe Aufbau Principle is a general rule, but there are some cases where it doesn't apply because of how electrons interact with each other and how stable the element is, especially in transition metals and heavier elements.
