The behavior of electromagnetic waves is described by Maxwell's equations, which mathematically express how electric and magnetic fields propagate and interact. Wavelength and frequency are related by the relationship between wavelength, frequency, and the speed of light.\r

The electromagnetic spectrum encompasses all types of electromagnetic radiation, ranging from very long wavelength radio waves to very short wavelength gamma rays. It is divided into different regions based on wavelength and frequency: radio waves (from millimeters to thousands of kilometers) have wavelengths from a few kHz to gigahertz (GHz), microwaves (from 1 millimeter to 30 centimeters) have wavelengths from 1 GHz to 300 GHz, infrared (IR) has wavelengths from 700 nanometers to 1 millimeter, and visible light (violet to red) has wavelengths from 430 THz to 770 THz, and ultraviolet (UV) has wavelengths from 10 nm to 400 nm, and x-rays have wavelengths from 0.01 nm to 10 nm, and gamma rays have wavelengths less than 0.01 nm and frequency greater than 30 EHz.\r

Visible light, a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum, is detectable by the human eye and has a color range from violet to red. White light, such as sunlight, is composed of a mixture of all visible wavelengths and disperses into the colors of the visible spectrum when passed through a prism.\r
