That’s what we’ll look at in this video.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eWhat are Ground Rules\u003cbr/\u003eGround rules set out a code of conduct for a team. They explain the behaviors that everyone needs to follow. \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eIdeally, your team should create its own set of ground rules, rather than the Project manager imposing them. But, of course, some contexts will demand certain ground rules apply.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eExamples of these are where you are working in domains of high security or where there are safety-critical activities. But even here, you’ll usually find that, once team members understand the priorities, they will set appropriate ground rules for themselves.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eTeams will always be more likely to accept and abide by ground rules they've set themselves. A good set of ground rules will establish clear expectations and reduce uncertainty and ambiguity. \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, where is a team is familiar with one-another – or where they all come from the same prevailing organizational culture – it is quite possible you will not need to set ground rules at all. They will be implicit in the existing norms of behavior – how people already expect to work together.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eIn a Project Management environment, the team’s ground rules are likely to be a part of a wider Team Charter. This would include things like:\u003cbr/\u003e• Shared values\u003cbr/\u003e• Ground rules and expectations\u003cbr/\u003e• Processes (like decision-making and conflict resolution)\u003cbr/\u003e• Tools we use\u003cbr/\u003e• Authority\u003cbr/\u003e \u003cbr/\u003eSet the Ground Rules\u003cbr/\u003eHere’s a basic process I would use to set Project Team Ground Rules:\u003cbr/\u003e• Decide what is non-negotiable for:\u003cbr/\u003eo Our organization\u003cbr/\u003eo Our client\u003cbr/\u003eo Me, as project manager \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eI am likely to include things like ethical standards, respect, honesty, and integrity\u003cbr/\u003e• Facilitate a team conversation about ground rules. Explain what they are, why they are important, and how you plan to develop them.\u003cbr/\u003e• Ask your team to think about past work and project environments. What were the characteristics of good and bad environment?\u003cbr/\u003e• Based on these conversations, ask the team to suggest candidates for ground rules they want.\u003cbr/\u003e• Add your own, if they aren’t there.\u003cbr/\u003e• Now ask the team to remove duplicates, arrange them in order, and tidy up wording.\u003cbr/\u003e• Once everyone agrees, post these ground rules where everyone can see them\u003cbr/\u003e• Revisit them in project team meetings – and review them if necessary.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eGround rules are likely to cover things like:\u003cbr/\u003e• Time-keeping\u003cbr/\u003e• Inclusion, tolerance, respect\u003cbr/\u003e• Responsibility and accountability – individual and shared\u003cbr/\u003e• Fairness\u003cbr/\u003e• Contribution and being heard\u003cbr/\u003e• Social aspects of the team\u003cbr/\u003e• Confidentiality\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eSticking to Your Ground Rules\u003cbr/\u003eIt’s your responsibility as Project Manager (and team leader) to enforce the ground rules and deal with violations. But, the team will often do this for you. If they don’t – act quickly, but in a measured way.
