I will introduce you to the Area Model as a form of a graphic organizer in Math. We will understand area to model for side times side, length times width, or base times height and use this understanding to factor and distribute. We will understand the expression we are given has two terms - a variable term and a constant term. We will enter each term in its own section of the area model. We will then identify the factors of the coefficient of the variable term and the factors of the constant term. We will identify a factor that both terms have in common. We will write this term on the outside of the area model as one of the sides of our rectangle. We will use this factor to determine what the second side is equal to in order for our area model to be accurate. We will write our expression as a product of a factor and an expression in parentheses. We will then distribute to check our factoring. An exemplar solution is modeled and explained.\n
