We use elimination to describe this process because we will eliminate a variable by adding or subtracting the two equations. Before we add or subtract...\nIn this video playlist you will explore how to solve a linear system by elimination. We use elimination to describe this process because we will eliminate a variable by adding or subtracting the two equations. Before we add or subtract the equations we need to determine which variable to solve for first. Eliminating the variable that has the same absolute value in both equations is the preferred starting point. However sometimes your system will not provide such numbers so you will then want to choose the variable that has the easiest smallest LCD. Once you have identified the variable you will eliminate first you will need to determine if you will eliminate the variable by adding or subtracting the two equations. If the variables are both positive or negative you will need to subtract the two equations. If one is positive, and one negative you will need to add the two equations. By combining the two equations and eliminating a variable you now have one equation and one variable to solve for. Once you solve for that variable you will want plug the value of that variable into the other equation to solve for the other variable.\n
