An exponential function is a function that increases rapidly as the value of x increases. To graph an exponential function, it is usually very useful to make the table of values of the function. This is done by choosing a range of values of x and then plug the x-values into the function to get the y-values. We then graph the obtained points. When a constant is added/subtracted to the exponential function, the function is said to be transformed vertically. Addition of a constant to the function moves the graph of the exponential function upwards while subtraction of a constant to the function moves the graph of the exponential function downwards.
