Sure, IELTS asks you some weird questions.

They may be about topics you’ve never even thought about before, or things you have no experience with.

For instance, in Speaking Part 1, you may be asked about your favorite wild animal.

In Part 3, perhaps you’ll be asked about the effectiveness of online advertising in selling products.

Yes, you see ads online, but do you know the data of how successful those ads are? Probably not.

Even if you’re faced with tough questions such as those, you should still never say, “I don’t have any information about that question,” shrug your shoulders, and wait for the next question.

This lowers your score in every single category that the examiner is grading you on. If you don’t speak, you get low scores!

So, instead of saying that, you can say: Forgive me, I have only passing familiarity with that.

Or

Sorry, that’s honestly not something I pay attention to.

Then, follow that up by saying why you don’t know about it, or how you could learn about it.

For instance, you could say, Forgive me, I only have passing familiarity with wild animals of any sort. But, you know, I could learn more about them by watching shows on the National Geographic channel. I think I’ll tune in to Nat Geo tonight and learn about some wild animals!

Remember that there are no wrong ideas on IELTS- as long as you are answering the question, staying on topic more or less, you’ll be fine!\n
