“Sometimes students write very long sentences that zig, zag and zoom so much that they become run-on sentences.”

Yes! This happens all the time.

Candidates desiring high grammar scores often try to write really long sentences. The longer they are, the more mistakes they have.

You don’t have to have lots of super long sentences to get high grammar scores!

In order to get a 7, you need a mix of simple, compound, and some complex sentences. Many of your sentences have to be perfect.

For an 8, you should include a few more complex sentences, and a majority of the sentences must have no errors.

This variety of sentence structures can be fulfilled by having two clauses in the complex sentences. You don’t need more than that.

Follow these tips to gain control over your sentences:

1. When you join two independent clauses, you cannot just use a comma. That’s a comma splice. You have to use a comma and a conjunction.
2. When you add a clause, make sure it is one that you know the rules for, such as relative clauses or conditionals.
3. Start by limiting yourself to only two clauses per complex sentence.
4. When you are confident in those, you can try adding a third clause to a couple sentences.
