Can you imagine getting an IELTS Part 2 card asking you to describe a constellation? What a nightmare!

A constellation is a shape in the stars, like Orion or Andromeda.

Now, this is a very tough question for me as well, as I have little experience related to this topic.

In college, I took an astronomy class, but retained very little information beyond the vague memory of one nighttime stargazing session.

Likewise, I do not know a lot, nor do I care, about astrology, which is the prediction of personality and occurrences based on the stars.

Thus, there were only a couple memories I could dredge up to fill the 2 minutes required in Speaking Part 2.

First, I introduce my answer in an honest way, acknowledging that this topic was difficult for me to talk about.

Then, I dive into describing the memory of when my dad would point out 2 constellations to me, the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper, every time we were outside at night.

I try to expand on this memory as much as I can, describing why this memory matters to me, the circumstances of looking at the constellation, and how it impacts my actions today.

Toward the end of the answer, I begin to connect it to a recent stargazing experience, when we had the complete solar eclipse here in Oregon.

Of course, I ran out of time before I could explain about the eclipse. However, that is a positive thing to happen on your exam, because it shows you can keep talking, which proves fluency.

Remember, your best go-to strategy for any Part 2 topic is to think of a story to describe in as much detail as you can.

This allows you to present specific vocabulary, coherent transition phrases, and expressive pronunciation connected to a personal memory.
