If you have been lucky enough to find a good IELTS teacher, you know that you must show the examiner interesting and idiomatic language in order to score a 7 or higher for vocabulary.

So, today, Jessica will teach you 4 idioms that native speakers use, which all contain words related to the environment.

1. A drop in the ocean
This means a very small part of something much, much larger.
For example: My vocabulary knowledge is only a drop in the ocean compared to all the English vocabulary that exists.

2. Beat around the bush
This means to talk around something that you want to say, or to not say directly what you mean.
For example: Don’t beat around the bush on your IELTS exam! Say exactly what you mean in a very direct way.

3. Down to earth
This phrase describes a person who is very logical, sensible and calm.
For example: My sister is very down to earth. She never gets angry or upset and is always calm, even when things are difficult.

4. Neck of the woods
This term describes your local area or neighborhood.
For example: In my neck of the woods, in Portland, OR, people ride their bicycles everywhere.\n
