The purpose is to tell the reader, or, in this case, the examiner, what will be in the paragraph.

Thus, it is general. Try not to include any specific details in your topic sentence. Those will be stated later in the body paragraph, and you don’t want to repeat yourself!

3 Things Your Topic Sentence Needs:

Main idea of the essay

Simple, direct communication

The main idea of the essay will be repeated, so make sure to paraphrase and not use the exact same words each time.

The main idea of the paragraph is, for instance, the agree/disagree or advantage/disadvantage standpoint focused on.

The topic sentence is usually a simple sentence, and is very general and direct. The fancy, impressive structures and ideas will follow this sentence.

Topic sentence examples:

IELTS Task 2 question: All parents should be required to complete parental training. Do you agree or disagree?

Paragraph 2:

Firstly, support exists for those who believe a parenting certification should not be required.

Paragraph 3:

However, I feel that all caregivers should receive education regarding parenting skills.

After the topic sentence, remember to include very specific details and examples to support the main idea.\n
