Cells from her sample prove to be remarkably durable and prolific, becoming the first human cell line to successfully propagate in vitro. Henrietta loses her battle with cancer, but her cells, known as HeLa cells, are immortal; capable of reproducing indefinitely. Since 1953, HeLa cells have been used commercially for research into cancer, the Polio vaccine, AIDS, gene mapping and countless other scientific pursuits. Despite Henrietta’s enormous gift to science and humanity, her family has never received compensation. The courts have ruled that a person’s discarded tissue and cells are not his or her property and can be commercialized, but the Lacks family continues to fight for control of Henrietta’s genome.\n
