1. Make eye contact 99% of the time. Whether the topic of the moment pertains to you or not, look at whoever is speaking and stay nonverbally engaged. Even if you don't currently care about what they are saying, look at them. Eye contact skills take practice and will have to work to develop a habit of making eye contact. Keep in mind, you're listening--not speaking--the majority of the time in a group. That's why eye contact ranks very high in a list of group communication skills.

2. Look at EVERYBODY. Look at people across the table, right next to you, and especially the high-status people in the room. When you do so, you open up a channel to people and come across as more engaged to everybody. It is a key group leadership skill to look at everybody in the group often.

3. High-status people look at other high-status people. One of the quickest ways to establish yourself and show your group leader skills is communicating status. Leaders, in general, practice good group communication skills. Groups are a key setting you can establish yourself. \n
