Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastrointestinal disorder that causes recurrent and chronic abdominal pain that is associated with a change in bowel habits. IBS is associated with a variety of conditions including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and major depressive disorder. The etiology of IBS is not entirely known; however, there are likely issues with gastrointestinal motility and visceral hypersensitivity. IBS is diagnosed via history and with the aid of the Bristol stool chart and Rome IV Criteria. Furthermore, IBS is categorized into several subtypes as well. The treatment and management of IBS includes lifestyle changes (dietary changes, fiber intake, psyllium) along with some medical and alternative treatments, which we describe in this lesson.\n
