As civilizations emerged, the need to tell time in a consistent manner became essential. Ancient Egyptians used the shadow clock to separate morning from afternoon and track summer and winter solstices. This primitive clock evolved into the sundial. Around the same time, Babylonians were using water clocks to tell time, which measured the flow of water from one vessel into another. This technology would form the basis of the hourglass. By burning a powdered substance with a known rate of combustion, incense clocks could tell time and mark different hours by scent. The invention of the verge escapement, which allowed gears to advance at regular intervals would soon usher in the age of the mechanical clock.\n
