Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, both at North Carolina State University. Dr.
Kleiman has more than forty years of experience as an education leader whose work
spans research, policy and practice. A cognitive psychologist by background (Ph.D.,
Stanford, 1977), he has been on the faculty at the University of Illinois, University of
Toronto, Harvard University, as well as NC State University. He was Vice-President and
Senior Scientist at Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) for 22 years, where he led
National Science Foundation funded programs to improve mathematics teaching and
learning, the U.S. Department of Education Regional Education Lab, the Center for
Online Professional Education, the Harvard-EDC Leadership and the New Technologies
Institutes, and the EdTech Leaders Online program. He was the Executive Director of
the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at NC State University from 2007-2018,
where he played lead roles in developing North Carolina’s Race to the Top proposal, the
state’s Digital Learning Plan for K-12 Schools, the MOOCs for Educators program, and,
in collaboration with WestEd and the Learning Policy Institute, the Sound Basic
Education for All Action Plan to guide North Carolina in addressing its constitutional
obligations as determined by the State Supreme Court in the Leandro v. NC case. He has
served as a committee chair of the North Carolina e-Learning Commission and on the
executive committee of the North Carolina Governor’s Education Transformation
Commission. He now serves on the boards of Western Governors University of North
Carolina, FIRST Robotics of North Carolina, Cary Academy, and the Duke Talent
Identification Program (TIP), as well as an advisor on multiple projects. He is the author
of numerous articles and chapters, and of a forthcoming book on major policy issues in
public education. \n
