Many people have asked me what’s the hardest part about my job and they’re surprised by the answer. It’s not something that most people would consider…unless of course you’re a teacher. The hardest part of being a teacher…. is falling in love with, then saying goodbye to a new group of students every year. I teach high school, and I love being around teenagers. They’re hilarious. They’re full of life and joy and they keep me young. Of course there are a few students that I butt heads with but I still love them. And at the point when I’m closest to my students, they leave, and I’m sad. But not like ‘sad because I wished they stayed sad’. But, sad ‘because I miss them’ sad. But right after they leave a new group of students shows up the next school year. And honestly in the beginning of the year I’d be thinking, “I will never love this group of students as much as I loved the last group.” But I fall in love again. And then they leave. Again. Over the years, through Facebook and the grapevine, I hear about my former students getting married or having kids or landing a great job. I’ve even had a few students pass away. And everyone once in awhile I’m blessed with something that fills me with joy and gratitude and reminds me why I became an educator- A letter from a former student. This Thanksgiving week, take 10 minutes to write a letter to one of your former teachers. Tell them what you are up to and tell them how they made a difference. You might be thinking, “it’s been years, they’ve forgotten all about me” but they haven’t. They loved you, and you never forget those that you love. I’m going to write my letter to Mrs. Weber, who 26 years ago gave a rambunctious and underachieving 8th grader a totally undeserved “outstanding student” award. I’m so Thankful for her and isn’t that what thanksgiving is all about. So do your teachers and the world a favor, share this video and setting a side a few minutes this Thanksgiving week to thank your teachers for their hard work, service, and love.\n
