We urgently need to adapt agriculture to the challenges faced by climate change. Join us in discussion with Museum scientist Dr Sandy Knapp and Dr Iris Peralta of the National University of Cuyo to discover how a global community are working to find, collect and protect the wild cousins of some of our favourite crops, with the aim of keeping them permanently on the menu. About the speakers Dr Sandy Knapp is one of the world's experts on food crops, and head of the Plant Division at the Natural History Museum. She is a specialist in the taxonomy of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), which includes potatoes, tomatoes and aubergines. She has described over 75 new species of plants over her 40 years of research, with her work taking her to remote locations across Central and South America. Dr Iris Peralta is a botanist and researcher at the National University of Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. She is a world-leading expert on wild tomatoes, plant biology and genetics. She completed post-doctoral studies at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the Natural History Museum, and is a principal investigator for the Argentinian Institute for Research in Arid Zones of CONICET (National Council for Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina). ---------------- The Natural History Museum in London is home to over 80 million objects, including meteorites, dinosaur bones and a giant squid.
