To prevent history from repeating itself, we need to understand that only one species is truly responsible for the spread of viral outbreaks: us. Join us for a discussion with Prof Kate Jones, world-leading professor of ecology and biodiversity at University College London (UCL), for an exploration of why viral outbreaks happen and why we need to re-evaluate our relationship with nature. About the speaker Kate is a professor at the Centre for Biodiversity and Environmental Research at UCL. Her current research is on understanding the effects of land use and climate change on ecological systems and human health, with a focus on emerging infectious diseases from animals, including COVID-19. She has authored over 100 publications, is a recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Prize for outstanding contributions to zoology and is an Honorary Fellow at the Zoological Society of London. Kate is one of the world's leading experts on bats, having chaired the Bat Conservation Trust for five years. She has led the development of global citizen science projects in conjunction with governments and conservation organisations to monitor bat populations. The Natural History Museum in London is home to over 80 million objects, including meteorites, dinosaur bones and a giant squid.
