Ashes! - We all fall down. Some believe that the popular rhyme dates back to the children who lived through the Black Death; the bubonic plague that decimated Europe in the 17th century. A rosy-red rash on the skin, or “ring around the rosie”, was believed to be a sign that you had been infected; while a “pocket full of posies” described the scented flowers that were carried and held close to the nose to stave off the smell of death and disease. The last line, ‘we all fall down’, supports the belief at the time that death was a certainty. While the connections may seem legitimate, experts regard this explanation as simply ‘urban legend’.\n
