In the early morning hours of April 26, 1986, Soviet engineers are tasked with conducting a safety test of Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Unfortunately, the third shift engineers on duty have not been trained for the procedure. When the test supervisor fails to follow protocol, an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction is set into motion. The reactor explodes; showering nearly 40,000 square miles with radioactive contamination. Firemen and station staff work tirelessly to put out the reactor core fire that burns for nine days. Many are exposed to lethal doses of radiation in less than a minute. By December 1986, Reactor 4 is entombed in a protective sarcophagus to reduce the spread of radioactive contamination. In 2017, an additional structure is built over the sarcophagus and the reactor to aid in the clean-up effort that is scheduled for completion in 2065, almost 80 years later.\n
