Jefferson writes, Adams edits. After the American Revolution, their friendship flourishes in the courts of Europe, where they serve as diplomats for the new American republic. A rift in their friendship emerges during the 1796 presidential election when Jefferson runs against Adams. Jefferson argues for states rights, while Adams pushes for a strong federal government. Adams wins the presidency, but Jefferson, now his vice president, abandons his friend and refuses to support his administration. Four years later, Jefferson wins the presidency denying Adams a second term. For twelve years, these American icons avoid one another, until Adams writes Jefferson in 1812. They begin exchanging letters for the next fourteen years until the day they die… on the same day - July 4, 1826 - the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.\n
