When they do not fit the chord they should belong to one of the group of inessential notes, such as passing notes, auxiliary notes, or changing notes. In this music theory lesson we investigate the anticipatory note. The anticipatory note occurs when a melody uses a note belonging to the prevailing chord then moves, usually by step to a note that is dissonant with the prevailing chord but which belongs to the following chord, thereby anticipating what is about to happen. It provides a means of decorating a melodic line and is a useful way of emphasising the end of a phrase. In this music theory lesson the anticipatory note is fully explained and you can see and hear examples of where it might be used. Useful for anyone wanting to recognise anticipatory notes in their playing or singing, for anyone analysing the use of inessential notes, and for anyone wanting to decorate melodic lines in their composing and arranging. \n
