What does it take to engineer a smart bandaid? Biomedical engineer Ali Khademhosseini walks us through the future of bandaids, and how he and his team at MIT are testing them.

Dr. Khademhosseini believes that smart bandaids will help us treat and respond to wounds better than by using old technologies. Flexible electronics are now allowing us to venture into this world.

Smart bandaids will sense bacteria on a wound and then respond to it by releasing materials, or antibiotics, in order to treat and heal the infection.

But challenges remain in designing this smart bandaid to work properly. In order to not make wounds on animals or human subjects, Dr. Khademhosseini and his team are engineering skin in their lab to make wounds on. Then they infect the wound with bacteria, allowing them to test their smart bandaid.

It may be a while before you pick up a smart bandaid at your local drugstore, but thanks to the National Science Foundation and Dr. Khademhosseini’s innovation, that future will come sooner than ever before.
