He is the author of over a dozen books and chapters, including Leveling the Playing Field, co-authored with Shifra Bronznick and Didi Goldenhar (2008); The Practice of Adaptive Leadership, (Harvard Business Press 2009), co-authored with Ronald Heifetz and Alexander Grashow; and, with Heifetz, Leadership on the Line (Harvard Business Press 2002). Marty has been at the Harvard Kennedy School since 1979, except for three years in the early 1990s when he was Chief Secretary and Counsellor to then - Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld. He came to Harvard after careers in politics and journalism, having served as a Member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, an Assistant Massachusetts Attorney General, a reporter and editorial writer at the Boston Globe, and the editor of the alternative weekly, The Real Paper. Marty is a graduate of Williams College and Harvard Law School. He is the father of three married children with two wonderful grandchilden (and another on the way). He lives in New York City with his wife, Lynn Staley, who was Assistant Managing Editor for Design at Newsweek (that’s why they moved to NYC) and is now an accomplished painter in her “retirement career”. Marty is into serious decluttering, spends as much time as possible at their house in Italy, roots for his beloved Red Sox, enjoys good drink and vegetarian food (a reward for all that exercise) and collects baseball cards (over 25,000 of them).\n
