Until that time, he had thought of poetry as a relatively antique art form.

But an excellent teacher exposed him to the work of many contemporary poets, and he began to see how poetry can inform one’s view of the world and become part of one’s daily life. Since then poetry — the reading of it and about it, the writing of it, and the promotion of it — has become a near-obsession for the West Hartford poet.

Like Hartford’s renowned poet Wallace Stevens, Finnegan works in insurance. He in an underwriter of financial institution risk. He’s also president of Friends and Enemies of Wallace Stevens and the poetry editor for The Wallace Stevens Journal. Along with Dennis Barone, he edited the anthology “Visiting Wallace: Poems Inspired by the Life and Work of Wallace Stevens.”

Finnegan’s own poetry has been published in prestigious literary journals such as Ploughshares, The Southern Review, and other publications, as well as in the anthology “Good Poems: American Places.” He served as poet laureate of West Hartford from 2011 to 2013 and organizes the Charter Oak Readings series in Hartford. Previously he ran the WordForge poetry series. Finnegan shares some of his aphoristic musings about poetry on his blog ursprache.blogspot.com.

In his poetry, Finnegan looks at our transitory existence and explores the mystery and anonymity of the self. He believes that “poetry gives all people an opportunity to express themselves and to engage the world deeply without the need for a lot of materials, resources or technology. Thousands of years from Homer or Sappho, we can still carry around poems in our heads.”\n
