Smart assistants have become popular in recent years, and while they’ve proven to be useful around the house, they’ve also raised a lot of privacy concerns a lot of which stem from having a speaker that is listening to you at all times. A valid privacy concern that only doubles when you add a camera into the mix. But the thing is, the camera addition to the Google Nest Hub Max is the biggest update--other than its increased size. The camera gives a user the ability to video chat using Google Duo (Google’s version of FaceTime), and also control other Nest devices like stand alone cameras, or doorbells--basically creating a security system in your own home. And while there’s no lens cap to cover the camera, Google does have a physical killswitch on the back that will disable both the camera and microphone. The Google Nest Hub Max costs $229 directly competing with the Amazon Echo Show, which also costs $229. If you think both of those are too expensive, but still want a smart home speaker display, then you can get the Facebook Portal starting at $179 But should you buy a smart display in the first place?
