\nNational science academy members worldwide, concerned about dozens of unjustly imprisoned colleagues (none of whom advocates violence but many are tortured, some are murdered) use their high-level connections, cultural/political...\nNational science academy members worldwide, concerned about dozens of unjustly imprisoned colleagues (none of whom advocates violence but many are tortured, some are murdered) use their high-level connections, cultural/political knowledge, and personal prestige, along with that of their academies, to defend the rights of such colleagues and to ameliorate their plight. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the cornerstone of their efforts and includes rights essential to scientists and scientific progress. The speaker will describe selected science and human rights issues around the globe, individual cases, and how scientists and their academies help resolve them. This lecture is a part of the 80th Anniversary Celebrations of CARA (Council for Assisting Refugee Academics). The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website.
