The Efficient Market Hypothesis would have us believe that markets are enormous news processors and that they set prices more efficiently than any other system. However, it doesn’t take long to find examples where this isn’t true. Professor Chadha, the Gresham Professor of Commerce introduces this puzzle in the short interview ahead of his lectures this year. Jagjit Chadha is the Mercers’ School Memorial Professor of Commerce at Gresham College and Professor of Economics at the University of Kent. He has also acted as an academic adviser to HM Treasury, the Bank of England and many policy-making institutions around the world. His main interests lie in macroeconomics, with a particular focus on monetary issues. Professor Chadha has been at the University of Kent since 2007, where holds the position of Professor and Chair in Money and Banking at the Department of Economics and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge. He is also Chair of the Money, Macro and Finance Research Group and a specialist adviser to the Treasury Committee. Professor Chadha will be delivering six lectures on the macroeconomic puzzles caused by the difference between economic theory and practice. From the Carry Trade to the Equity Premium, these real world phenomena are discussed and dissected to see what we might need to add to the theory and how we might improve our understanding. These talks are sure to delight the enthusiast and the student of economics alike. Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website.
