\nChristopher Hogwood explains one of the most extreme examples of Mozart's compositions \"doing what they are not supposed to\" Mozart is renowned for writing \"multiple characterisations\" in his music, whether for voices in his operas or...\nChristopher Hogwood explains one of the most extreme examples of Mozart's compositions \"doing what they are not supposed to\" Mozart is renowned for writing \"multiple characterisations\" in his music, whether for voices in his operas or for instruments in his orchestral pieces, but at times this reaches an extreme, as an instrument rebels against the expected style of the rest of the group. With the help of Mea Wade and players from the Royal College of Music, Christopher Hogwood talks us through a \"pretty way out\" example of this, from the last movement of Mozart's Oboe Quartet in F major, k.370. It is one of the rare occasions where Mozart allows one player to go off in a completely different metrical measure than the rest of the group, as the oboe breaks away to play in 4:4 time alongside the rest of the group playing in 6:8. The result is something really quite amazing when it is all put together. The quartet comprises Mea Wade (oboe), Eleanor Corr (violin), Richard Waters (viola) and Antonio Novais (cello). This is an extract from one of a series of ongoing free public lectures and concerts given by Christopher Hogwood in his capacity as Professor of Music at Gresham College.
