This nine-metre long textile is on display at the British Museum from 21 Jan to 15 Aug 2016 and the film shows how monks on the island of Majuli, in Upper Assam, present annual re-enactments of the stories which are depicted on the cloth. Many of these ancient narratives were transformed into dramas over 400 years ago by the great scholar and saint Shankaradeva (died 1568) and the Majuli monks make masks and wear elaborate make up and costumes, joining other male performers, young and old, to enact the dramas in front of the local people.
