The chapel was consecrated on 28 April 1140, having been commissioned by the Norman king Roger II. Sitting at the centre of Roger’s palace, the chapel reflects the multiculturalism of Norman Sicily, where different influences mixed to create a unique style. Byzantine mosaic artists adapted their skills for western church architecture and southern Italian artisans made the inlaid marble floor.
