While the cup is an extraordinary statement of status, it was also functional. Made in Murano (Venice) around 1475–1500, the glass was used to toast guests to Deblín Castle in Moravia, near Brno. The Waddesdon Bequest is a collection of medieval and Renaissance treasures bequeathed to the British Museum by Baron Ferdinand Rothschild in 1898. It was redisplayed in a new gallery in June 2015\n
