More than 150 puppeteers from 29 countries are performing simultaneously at four venues with the hope of encouraging children to switch off their smart...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              The World Puppet Carnival is taking place in Russia.\u003cbr/\u003e              More than 150 puppeteers from 29 countries are performing simultaneously at four venues with the hope of encouraging children to switch off their smart devices and join in.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE\u003cbr/\u003e              One of the Carnival's highlights is this unique Vietnamese puppet theatre, which traditionally is performed on water.\u003cbr/\u003e              Puppeteers standing waist-deep in water are hidden from the spectators with a special screen. They operate the puppets under the water with a rod, also not seen by the audience. \u003cbr/\u003e              A special basin brought from Vietnam was installed in the main city square for performances.\u003cbr/\u003e              The history of Vietnamese water puppetry goes back to 11th century when ordinary villagers entertained each other making the performances on the village ponds or flooded paddies.\u003cbr/\u003e              Ngo Thanh Thuy, the Vietnamese Puppetry Theatre Director, says she' glad to have the opportunity to travel the world thanks to the World Puppet Carnival.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Ngo \"the World Puppet Carnival is the biggest event in the world\".\u003cbr/\u003e              This is the second time she has participated in this Carnival - the last time was in Bangkok in 2014 when they won the first prize.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"For us\", she says, \"it is a great chance for our artists, our officers and professors to learn more about other countries, art and get country exchange as well and professional exchange, and we learnt a lot from them for our career\".\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Rob Petrovic, founder and executive director of the Carnival, the event developed by accident and quickly grew into one of the most popular puppeteer events in the world.\u003cbr/\u003e              It was first staged in Prague, world capital of puppet art, in 2011, following the success of a parade that Petrovic directed in Hollywood.\u003cbr/\u003e              Since then the World Puppet Carnival has travelled around the globe and visited places such as Barcelona, Thailand, Bangkok, Bali, Hawaii.\u003cbr/\u003e              Petrovic hopes that such events will distract children from electronics and play stations and draw their attention to the puppets.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We try to make renaissance of the puppets to make puppets the best friends of a child,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to Petrovic, the Carnival is very famous and attracts about 800 applications every year. \u003cbr/\u003e              The World Puppet Carnival also has a greatest wider variety of genres, styles and puppet types represented - traditional marionettes, glove puppets, puppets played by stilt walkers and ventriloquists, shadow plays and many more.\u003cbr/\u003e              Some troupes present the traditions of their countries, for example Mexican team El Tenderete from Chihuahua based their play on a local legend about dancing animals.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to the legend, the deer is the main animal able to dance and then he taught other animals to dance so that through dancing they could reach happiness and harmony.\u003cbr/\u003e              The group - a mother, father and their daughter - brought 12 animal puppets wearing national costumes that represent different Mexican regions.\u003cbr/\u003e              Luisa Samaniego, the puppeteer from the group, says they \"try to make sure that all the folklore, culture, all the legends and history of their country are in the stories their plays.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              One more family tradition is represented by the Indian puppeteer and ventriloquist Ramdas Padhye who continues his father's business together with his wife and now his son and daughter-in-law. \u003cbr/\u003e              A mechanical engineer by education Padhye inherited the art of ventriloquism from his father Yeshwant Padhye, who was one of the pioneers of ventriloquism in India early last century.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Padhye, ventriloquism was used originally for magic shows but later developed into a very popular entertainment tool, however, it is not very easy to learn.\u003cbr/\u003e              Padhye explains that it is difficult to speak without moving your lips, as \"you need to know how to take in breath, then hold it for some time, and then exhale, it's a very long process (to learn).\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Padhye started to learn from his father when he was six years old, and made his first ventriloquism performance at seventeen, meaning that it took him 11 years of training to learn.\u003cbr/\u003e              Another fascinating technique represented at the Carnival is the theatre of shadows from the Swedish theatre Sesam.\u003cbr/\u003e              Beatboxing combined with colourful figurines projected on the white sheets create entirely new versions of the traditional fairy-tales 'Three Little Piggies' and 'Red Riding Hood'.\u003cbr/\u003e              One of the spectators, Inna Zul'fikarova, says \"it's nice to feel a child again, and puppets are great.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's very interesting\", Zul'fikarova adds, \"because when it's a usual theatre, there are people there like us, like you, (whether they are) from India, from Portugal, they are the same, but puppets (make the difference), there are different techniques, completely different forms, it's very interesting how different are the ways in which people show us their art.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The carnival runs for a total of five days, 14-18 August.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Yekaterinburg, Russia -
