It wants to speed up the return of IDPs...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              The Iraqi government is being criticised for its decision to close a number of schools for displaced children in the country's northern Kurdish region. \u003cbr/\u003e              It wants to speed up the return of IDPs (internally displaced people) but there are concerns the policy could mean thousands of children miss out on an education. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              This is the Hassan Sham camp in northern Iraq, home to thousands of IDPs. \u003cbr/\u003e              Many people fled here to escape the fighting between Iraqi forces and Islamic State (IS) fighters during the battle for Mosul. \u003cbr/\u003e              For the children who live here, most attend makeshift schools set up in tents. \u003cbr/\u003e              But now the Iraqi government wants to close the temporary schools and is recalling all teachers to return to their homes. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"(If they close the schools) the future of my children will be lost. I will have to take them to the NGO school. If I could get a job (back home) I would go back and have them schooled back in Tal Afar. That would be OK,\" says Nadhir Mustafa, a parent and displaced man from Tal Afar.  \u003cbr/\u003e              The school closure plan is intended to speed up the return of displaced people to their homes.  \u003cbr/\u003e              However, the Iraqi Ministry of Education's representative in Irbil, Abdulmujib Naif says that not all schools will be closed and not all teachers will be recalled. \u003cbr/\u003e              But he says teachers who are recalled will have to prove that they are unable to go home, otherwise they may lose their jobs.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There is a decision by the ministry to keep the representative office in the Kurdistan region but all the state employees (teachers) must go back to their home areas, while the areas that are still not secure or have no health services, or the people whose house has been destroyed, those people can stay if they can prove this,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              The ministry is aiming for a 70 percent cut in the number of IDP schools in Irbil governorate at the start of the coming school year.  \u003cbr/\u003e              One teacher who is affected by this is Suleiman Ibrahim, who teaches displaced children in Baharka, a town not far from Irbil. He himself is displaced from Tal Afar and he does not want to go back.\u003cbr/\u003e              As a Sunni, he is wary of the Shia militias who currently control the city. He also says that the damage is simply too much in Tal Afar to return and he'd rather stay in the safety and relative comfort of the Kurdish region.  \u003cbr/\u003e              The ministry's decision may affect as many as 416 IDP schools and thousands of students, although it's not yet clear which ones are going to close and which ones will stay open. \u003cbr/\u003e              Many camp managers say they've been given no information, even as the start of the school year approaches rapidly.
