Over 16,000 churches, cathedrals and religious sites now have access to portable...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Christian churches across England have begun accepting contactless card payments after noticing a fall in cash donations.\u003cbr/\u003e              Over 16,000 churches, cathedrals and religious sites now have access to portable card readers in the hope of keeping up with increasingly cashless congregations.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              St. John's Church in London's East End is like many up and down the country.\u003cbr/\u003e              Having noticed a fall in cash donations, the church's vicar, reverend Graham Hunter took it upon himself to solve the problem.\u003cbr/\u003e              He'd seen market traders using contactless card readers for transactions so went about installing a similar device inside the 19th century church.\u003cbr/\u003e              Hunter says his congregation quickly embraced the technology.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think in everyday life, people go into cafes and into supermarkets and they're used to paying with contactless all the time,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"So, suddenly to find that the church is kind of up to date in the 21st century is a normal thing for them, and it made it easier for people to give.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The contactless payment terminal lets church goers select from a number of preset amounts - from 5 to 50 British pounds (approx. $6.50 - $65.50 USD).\u003cbr/\u003e              Church goers can also make mobile payments. Once the transaction is complete, a receipt can be sent via email or text message.\u003cbr/\u003e              Hunter says he noticed cash donations had lessened. His congregation were increasingly relying on card payments, meaning less pennies for the collection plate.\u003cbr/\u003e              About a quarter of all voluntary donations to the church now come via contactless payments.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's certainly the case that cash donations now are very, very marginal to all of the money that is given voluntarily,\" says Hunter.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Most people give online, by standing order or direct debit, if they're a regular member of the church. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"But in terms of visitors, maybe getting on towards a quarter of all of the voluntary donations are now coming in through contactless giving that happens on a Sunday or also through the week, when people walk in. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We keep the church open and people like to just give a donation to support the mission and the ministry of the church.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              St. John's is now one of many.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Church of England recently announced it was embracing contactless and mobile payments in a bid to make transactions faster and easier.\u003cbr/\u003e              Over 16,000 church, cathedrals, and religious sites now have access to portable card readers. \u003cbr/\u003e              Hunter says the money raised is used on building upkeep, activities for children and to stage events for the local community, to name a few. Without it, he says, the church would struggle.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think all churches have to consider their finances and we're in a peculiar position hered , we are perhaps the closest residential neighbourhood to the historic city of London, through which half the world's wealth flows, and yet Hoxton remains one of the most deprived communities, with lots of people on low pay employment,\" says Hunter.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And while we campaign for better wages, better employment, better opportunities, we also recognised that if we don't raise more funds the church itself will face struggles.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Twenty-three-year-old church goer Zoe Mathias says she carries cash about once every six months, and that's only because she's lost her debit card. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I found it very useful, because I never have any cash with me, and all of the time there'll be something being sold in church and I'll want to buy it but will think; 'I don't know what to do,'\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And so, I'm very glad that our church has entered into the 21st century with contactless payment.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Hunter hopes embracing new technologies like contactless card payments will show churches can be modern, forward-thinking places.\u003cbr/\u003e              St. John's once installed a free public wi-fi zone in its garden, so passersby could surf the web while on their lunch break.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There are no walls or barriers between people who are being creative, on the cutting edge, pioneering in technology and what the Christian faith has to say,\" says Hunter. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"In fact, the Bible describes god as the chief technical officer, the CTO, a chief technician, an architect of all that is to come.
