Seven antelope have given birth, at least one more female is pregnant and others may be. \u003cbr/\u003e              The small herds wander in 3- to 46-acre swaths of forest, marking a partnership between the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans and San Diego Zoo Global. The zoos' Alliance for Sustainable Wildlife is aimed at preserving endangered species and producing popular species for zoos.\u003cbr/\u003e              It's housed at the Audubon Nature Institute's Species Survival Center in New Orleans, where the first hoofed animals arrived last spring and summer.\u003cbr/\u003e              Hatwood said there are several large acreage facilities in the United States – The Wilds in Ohio, Fossil Rim in Texas and San Diego Zoo Global Safari Park in California – but the center in New Orleans is the only one that's heavily forested. And there's another difference.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"What makes us a little bit unique is that we actually built this property with a partnership with San Diego Zoo Global,\" she said. \"So, we're the first one to kind of have two zoo facilities across the country from each other decide to work together to create a breeding center for some of these very endangered species or threatened species that have declining populations.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And that way if something does happen to these declining populations in the wild,\" she said, \"we have these animals still preserved for future generations to see.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              So far, seven baby antelope have been conceived and born at the center: two sand-colored sable antelope, two shy eland, two striped bongo and a yellow-backed duiker. All but the sable are females.\u003cbr/\u003e              Hatwood said giraffe are among the species with declining populations in the African wild. \u003cbr/\u003e              One giraffe has gotten pregnant since arriving, while three arrived pregnant and delivered healthy boys. The four antelope species have 6- or 9-month gestations, but it will be a while before the next giraffe calf _ their pregnancies can last up to 15 months.\u003cbr/\u003e              In addition, another sable antelope is pregnant, and some bongo and eland may be.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We have a constant, just rotation, all our animals are in various stages of pregnancy, so, the breeding is going very well,\" said Michael Birt, one of the animal caretakers at the center. \"We're very happy. We think it's just with the naturalistic environment they get to walk around, do what they want to do, and breed.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The bongos are Eastern bongo, a critically endangered subspecies.\u003cbr/\u003e              Where the babies go will depend on the species survival plan the Association of Zoos and Aquariums has for each animal.
