He's developed a type of lightning arrester that can be installed...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEAD IN  \u003cbr/\u003e              A Kenyan engineer has developed a low-cost option to protect local people and property from the dangers posed by lightning. \u003cbr/\u003e              He's developed a type of lightning arrester that can be installed on buildings relatively cheaply to protect against power surges. \u003cbr/\u003e              \u003cbr/\u003e              STORY-LINE : \u003cbr/\u003e              Lightning crashes in Western Kenya, near the eastern shore of Lake Victoria. \u003cbr/\u003e              The area is prone to violent thunderstorms, and many buildings are not equipped with lightning rods or arresters.\u003cbr/\u003e              A lightning arrester is placed on the roof of a building to protect internal wires from damage and protect the building's inhabitatants and people nearby. \u003cbr/\u003e              Copper is often a key component in the gadget but the metal is expensive and highly prized on the black market, making it attractive to thieves. \u003cbr/\u003e              So, engineer Meshac Kobul has developed a lightning arrester using aluminum rather than expensive copper. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The lightning and thunderstorm is giving a lot of problems here. That's why I came up with this idea because the ones, which were used, were a bit expensive due to copper flat (price). That's why I tried to come up with this easy system but so effective. That's why I am trying now to install them around our place, our schools and other places,\" he explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              Kobul uses a nephoscope, an instrument for measuring the altitude, direction and velocity of clouds, to assess the weather conditions. \u003cbr/\u003e              He builds the low cost arrester devices with his team of assistants in his small workshop in Siaya County. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's made of spark plugs, we have the ignition cylinder, and we have the spark spine. Now when lightning and thunderstorm comes, it strikes it. When it comes on the points, it will absorb it and the spark plugs will ignite and we shall have the spark sparkling in the ignition cylinder whereby the system will be taken when discharged to join the earthing system. That is PME, Protective Multiple Earthing, which takes it to the ground through the line which is connected,\" Kobul adds. \u003cbr/\u003e              Kobul's Komli Magnetic Arrester has been installed on the roof of Holy Trinity Church, in Maliera Parish.\u003cbr/\u003e              Church elder David Odhiambo Odenyo says it has given locals ressurance. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"This place where we are standing, has been affected by lightning strikes several times. So often we find children from a school nearby have been affected. So that's why such a technology is helping us very much because after we installed this gadget here, our school children here, our congregants in this church, together with those living in this compound no longer have to worry about lightning strikes.
