Apparently not,\" Pickering added.\u003cbr/\u003e              Trump claimed member nations had agreed to significantly boost their defense budgets and reaffirmed - after days of griping that the U.S. was being taken advantage of by its allies - that the U.S. remains faithful to the accord. \u003cbr/\u003e              There were no immediate specifics on what Trump said he had achieved, and French President Emmanuel Macron quickly disputed Trump's claim that NATO allies had agreed to boost defense spending beyond their existing goal of 2 percent of gross domestic product.\u003cbr/\u003e              Trump had spent his time in Brussels berating members of the military alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defense, accusing Europe of freeloading off the U.S. and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defense if they were attacked.\u003cbr/\u003e              Pickering was concerned that by concentrating on the funding issues, Trump was jeopardizing the health of the military alliance.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The notion you would hazard the strategic cohesion of NATO to win a personal victory on some monetary figures is a triumph of New York real estate negotiations over absolute reality and U.S. vital interests.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is a measure of the narcissism and the egotism of President Trump that he got caught up in this, in a way, as he constantly does, to shred the national interest in favor of personal promotion.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              NATO countries in 2014 set a goal of moving toward spending 2 percent of their gross domestic products on defense within 10 years.
