Khan al-Ahmar, in the Jerusalem desert, is home to around 180 people...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN;\u003cbr/\u003e              The Israeli army is preparing to demolish a Bedouin village in the West Bank because it says it is illegal under its planning laws. \u003cbr/\u003e              Khan al-Ahmar, in the Jerusalem desert, is home to around 180 people who have been living there since the 1950s. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Supreme Court approved the move to demolish the site in May, but an injunction was granted last week amid international opposition. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              The Israeli army uses cranes to lower prefabricated homes on to this plot of land in Abu Dis, near East Jerusalem. \u003cbr/\u003e              This is where Israel wants to move 180 members of the Bedouin village it wants to bulldoze. \u003cbr/\u003e              The site is near a rubbish dump. \u003cbr/\u003e              But the Bedouins are refusing Israel's plan. They say they want to continue to live in their open desert landscape. \u003cbr/\u003e              Armed officers from the Israeli police and army stand guard near the entrance of the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, just off the Route 1 highway. \u003cbr/\u003e              Israel says the structures that make up the Khan al-Ahmar encampment of corrugated shacks and tents were illegally built and pose a threat to residents because of their proximity to a highway.\u003cbr/\u003e              The bulldozers have moved in and are on standby to destroy the village. \u003cbr/\u003e              The UN refugee agency, the UNRWA, says If Israel carries out the demolition, women and children will be disproportionately affected because this is a small rural community \"being forcibly urbanised.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              Residents are standing firm and are refusing to leave their homes. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Yes, they have prepared a place in Abu Dis, but a place that we will not accept to live in because it is not an open place like here. Here we have livestock, our life is in the wilderness, we cannot bear to live in the city at all,\" says Muhammad Abu Dahouk a resident of Khan al-Ahmar. \u003cbr/\u003e              The village is located in the 60 percent of the West Bank known as Area C, which remains under exclusive Israeli control and is home to dozens of Israeli settlements.\u003cbr/\u003e              Israel places severe restrictions on Palestinian development there and home demolitions are not unusual.\u003cbr/\u003e              Critics, including the UN, are calling Israel's planned \"forcible transfer,\" a possible war crime. \u003cbr/\u003e              Round the clock solidarity visits have been taking place since Israel's High Court ruled last May that the state can demolish the only school in the area and the all of the community's homes. \u003cbr/\u003e              Since July 4th the Israeli bulldozers have been doing preparatory work such as levelling the ground around Khan al-Ahmar and making access roads. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Bedouin people are Palestine refugees from Tel Arad in the Naqab desert (the Negev in Hebrew). Israel expelled them from the area in the 1950s and moved them to the West Bank.\u003cbr/\u003e              And now they face the possibility of being forcibly transferred again. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We've been living here since 1952, my great-great-grandfather, all of us have been here,\" says 19 year-old Younes Abu Dahouk, another resident of Khan al-Ahmar. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We're not thinking about leaving, if they demolish we will rebuild our homes,\" he adds. \u003cbr/\u003e              There's been increasing local and international support given to this vulnerable community. Church leaders, the UN, Palestinian Authority officials and high-level representatives from the EU are visiting on a daily basis. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Jewish settlers of nearby Kfar Adumim have been steadily pushing the army and the state to remove the Bedouin from their current location to make way for more settlement expansion. \u003cbr/\u003e              Lawyers acting on behalf of the Bedouin people managed to extract two injunctions from the High Court. The first delayed the demolitions and the second to delay the eviction of the population.\u003cbr/\u003e              The lawyers submitted the second petition because there was a concern that the army could go ahead with eviction while waiting to demolish the houses until the case was settled.\u003cbr/\u003e              The State submitted its response to the first petition on Tuesday asking the court to reject the petition submitted on behalf of the Bedouin. \u003cbr/\u003e              All of this suspense has put a strain on the community. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We don't sleep at night really. We do not sleep during the night and not during the day but I mean thank God we have injunction after injunction,\" says Younes Abu Dahouk. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Israeli human rights organisation, Bikom, is providing support and advice on planning issues to the villagers of Khan al-Ahmar. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We still believe that there's an option to prevent the demolition and to find the way out to legalise all the communities of Khan al-Ahmar and more than this we believe that there is a need for a change with the Israeli policy regarding all the Bedouin communities, all the herding all over area C,\" says Alon Cohen-Lifshitz, an architect from BIMKOM. \u003cbr/\u003e              As part of interim peace deals in the 1990s, the West Bank was carved up into autonomous and semi-autonomous Palestinian areas, known as Areas A and B, and Area C, which is home to some 400,000 Israeli settlers.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Palestinians say that Area C, home to an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 Palestinians, is crucial to the economic development of their future state.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              ASSOCIATED PRESS \u003cbr/\u003e              Abu Dis, West Bank - 9 July 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
