And while you're going through that whole process and even if it doesn't work, or the pregnancy doesn't end up being viable, you've still got hope and it's not until right at the end or it may be a bit later on that you suddenly think, actually I didn't think I was that bothered about it but now it's finally been taken away, that's quite hard to deal with.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              32.  Various of Emma Lake working on her laptop\u003cbr/\u003e              LEADIN: \u003cbr/\u003e              Britain is celebrating two of its greatest achievements this month, the launch of the NHS and the birth of the first test tube baby, Louise Brown who was born forty years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e              Millions of women have since given birth to IVF babies according to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE: \u003cbr/\u003e              Hard to believe back in 1978, this baby healthy and loud, would be the first of millions.\u003cbr/\u003e              Louise Joy Brown came into the world on July 25th 1978, making sure everyone knew she'd arrived.\u003cbr/\u003e              She was the world's first test tube baby, born as a result of medical technology - in vitro fertilisation - which is now used by doctors worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003e              The doctor and the scientist welcoming her into the world are Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards.\u003cbr/\u003e              Their great achievement is now being celebrated by the Science Museum which is launching an exhibition to celebrate the technological advances that have been achieved since Brown's first birthday.\u003cbr/\u003e              In 1990 as the clamour for fertility treatment grew, the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) was established to establish standards of treatment and enforce ethics around the rapidly expanding science of embryology.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Authority's chairwoman Sally Cheshire says: \"IVF has changed the world. We don't know the exact number of babies that have been born since Louise Brown, but we've had estimates of five million, six million eight million, ten million. What we do know is there are literally millions of babies who've been born as a result of this pioneering treatment and patients have families that they ultimately long for.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              On show here there are personal effects donated by the Brown family as well instruments used for IVF.\u003cbr/\u003e              Curator Connie Orbach says: \"We have the baby tags and bracelets put on Louise at birth and on Lesley her mother in the hospital which I think is incredibly emotional and lovely and those were given to us specifically by Louise Brown, they loaned us from her and then next to that we have the letter that was written from Robert Edwards the embryologist, to Lesley Brown saying that she was pregnant and it's just lovely it says like please don't do too much Christmas shopping, or you know don't go skiing, or do anything too strenuous. And the idea when she got that letter and actually we've got it on film her talking about what it was like when she got that letter must have just been amazing.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              As well as the celebrations which have ushered in advances in IVF, it should be remembered that in 1978 there was still a great many people who viewed the treatment with suspicion and fear.\u003cbr/\u003e              This hate letter was sent to the Brown's three months after the birth.\u003cbr/\u003e              It's addressed directly to baby Louise and it was accompanied by a test tube in which a fake embryo and blood had been inserted.\u003cbr/\u003e              Some groups at the time feared IVF would denigrate the value of human life.\u003cbr/\u003e              Science is still moving on.\u003cbr/\u003e              Yacoub Khalaf, professor of reproductive medicine and surgery at Guy's Hospital in London says what we have seen so far is just the beginning.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It could lead to uncovering some of the mysteries of biology and using this information to try to advance science and give give it more dimension to help in more ways than the current, just mixing the eggs and the sperm to make embryos,\" says Khalaf.\u003cbr/\u003e              Khalaf and other doctors are now seeing whether medicine like stem cell tissue engineering can help men and women who currently have no hope, even with IVF, of raising a family.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says: \"I think the step change that everybody is looking for is that science could get us to a stage where artificial, or stem cell based kind of sperm and egg can be created.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Despite the great advances made in fertility treatment, there is still only a 30 per cent success rate. \u003cbr/\u003e              In the UK many women are often not able to afford to go beyond one, or two cycles of treatment because of the cost.\u003cbr/\u003e              The average cost of one IVF cycle is about 3,000 pounds, but the HFEA is concerned that women desperate to have children are being encouraged to have 'add ons' which don't increase their chances of success.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Cheshire: \"We look at the evidence for whether any of those add on treatments work and most of them, there is no evidence for that. We are concerned that vulnerable patients as you said, on an emotional rollercoaster and I've been a patient so I've been there I know how it is. That emotional rollercoaster should not be exploited by clinicians who are putting profit before patient care.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              By the time Louise Brown was celebrating her tenth birthday, ten thousand families around the world were also celebrating the technique which had given her life. \u003cbr/\u003e              But not every IVF story has a happy ending.\u003cbr/\u003e              Emma Lake has undergone several IVF treatments, because she has Cystic Fibrosis (CF) which can affect fertility. She also has Polycystic ovary syndrome.\u003cbr/\u003e              She started IVF in 2015 and the state funded two full cycles, but because her CF team weren't prepared to risk twins, only one embryo was put in at a time, rather than the standard two.\u003cbr/\u003e              The first cycle was unsuccessful. The next year her second cycle was successful but she had a miscarriage at around seven weeks. Later in the same year she had the second embryo transfer, which was successful but also resulted in miscarriage.\u003cbr/\u003e              In March 2017 she had her final IVF cycle, also successful but sadly resulting in another miscarriage.\u003cbr/\u003e              Emma Lake does not want to have any more IVF cycles and accepts that she will just be a team of two with her husband.\u003cbr/\u003e              But she says: All my friends are at an age where they are having children, so I feel like I'm losing that connection with my peer group and I think it's more about that feeling of being left behind. And while you're going through that whole process and even if it doesn't work, or the pregnancy doesn't end up being viable, you've still got hope and it's not until right at the end or it may be a bit later on that you suddenly think, actually I didn't think I was that bothered about it but now it's finally been taken away, that's quite hard to deal with.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Lake and other women facing a similar similar outlook will be looking with interest at what science will achieve over the coming forty years.\u003cbr/\u003e              Eight million women have given birth to
