A major exhibition of her art work and personal belongings recently opened in London, which includes her medication and...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Today ( 6 July) marks the birthday of the famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.\u003cbr/\u003e               A major exhibition of her art work and personal belongings recently opened in London, which includes her medication and specially designed corsets worn after a near-fatal bus crash.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              A self-portrait with the distinctive monobrow of Mexico's most famous artist, Frida Kahlo.\u003cbr/\u003e              It's part of a new exhibition launching at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, titled \"Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up\".\u003cbr/\u003e              It brings together the artwork, photographs and personal belongings of the revered 20th century artist.\u003cbr/\u003e              Another self-portrait is done in a traditional Tehuana costume - and the outfit it is based on is on display too.\u003cbr/\u003e              Twenty-two of her distinctive outfits dominate the show - colourful, floor-length garments that encapsulate the indigenous Tehuana style that Kahlo embraced.\u003cbr/\u003e              Placing these items alongside her work aims to shed new light on her fascinating, but often difficult, life.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's quite unusual to mix art and personal items in the way we've done here,\" says Claire Wilcox, co-curator of the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"But for Frida, who was the artist who painted so many self portraits and whose construction of identity was so important, to be able to show the actual costumes that she wore and to see the flecs of paint scattered all over them, and to understand more about how and why she looked the way she did, seemed a very important subject for an exhibition.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Kahlo's life was blighted by ill health, with medical aids and medication a major part of the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003e              As a young woman, Kahlo was involved in a near-fatal bus crash. She had to wear a series of corsets throughout her life to deal with the serious spinal injuries she suffered.\u003cbr/\u003e              Later, her leg was amputated due to poor circulation.\u003cbr/\u003e              But her disabilities did not stop her art - in fact, they inspired it.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kahlo decorated the plaster casts that bound her back, using a mirror to direct her painting.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Frida's identity, her appearance, her art, are all wrapped up in the landscape of her disabilities. She lived her life in pain but she transcended it,\" says Wilcox. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"She distracted attention from her bad leg, from the injuries to her back by wearing brightly coloured, loose country clothing.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Some of the items included in the exhibition had never left Mexico before.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kahlo's personal items were locked away in her home for half a century after her death in 1954 before they went on public show.\u003cbr/\u003e              Many of them have found their way to the UK thanks to the Museo Frida Kahlo.\u003cbr/\u003e              Much of this collection has been loaned to the V\u0026amp;A by the institution.\u003cbr/\u003e              This painted corset is considered one of the jewels of the Mexico City-based museum.\u003cbr/\u003e              Hilda Trujillo, Director of the Museo Frida Kahlo, says this exhibition is a \"contemporary interpretation\". \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The main thing is it keeps the spirit, keeps the originality and understands the intimacy of Frida Kahlo.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              This intimacy includes letters from her husband Diego Rivera - and from one of her lovers, Nickolas Murray.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kahlo is now considered one of the most significant artists of the 20th century.\u003cbr/\u003e              She had some success during her own lifetime, but was mainly known as the wife of fellow artist Diego Rivera.\u003cbr/\u003e              But in the decades since her death, her star has eclipsed her husband's.\u003cbr/\u003e              Now her work is sold at auction for enormous sums - a painting titled \"Two Lovers in a Forest\" went for eight million US dollars in 2016.\u003cbr/\u003e              And Trujillo believes the world has embraced the artist more than her homeland has.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think it's more important for the world than in Mexico!\" she says, \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Frida is an international phenomena.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              But Kahlo's importance to Mexico can't be ignored.\u003cbr/\u003e              Her home, known as La Casa Azul, is now a museum in her honour.\u003cbr/\u003e              And she is remembered as a proponent of Mexican culture at a time when Paris and New York dominated fashions.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"When she was alive she set out to shine a light on the traditional dress of Oaxaca, Mexico,\" says Ximena Jordan, Coordinator of Projects and Sponsorships of the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museums.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In doing so, she was alive during a time period when the famous women in Mexico weren't doing that, they were doing things but they weren't highlighting the value of the textile art and the general appearance of the Mexican woman.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up\" runs until 4 November 2018.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              ASSOCIATED PRESS\u003cbr/\u003e              London, UK - 13 June 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
