But while young women feel this gives them more freedom to wait and choose the right partner, there are...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              Women in Egypt are increasingly opting to freeze their eggs so they can choose when to have a baby.\u003cbr/\u003e              But while young women feel this gives them more freedom to wait and choose the right partner, there are concerns among the older generation that they might put off marriage for too long.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              A career woman, but also with one eye on starting a family.\u003cbr/\u003e              Six years ago, as she was approaching her 40s, paediatrician Nesrin Sobhy decided to freeze her eggs fearing that she might not meet the right match during her most fertile years.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I thought of making use of medical developments. I wanted to take all precautions. This was very important to me.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              She adds that there was also a social pressure since women in Egypt are still regularly judged in terms of whether they have a family and children: \u003cbr/\u003e              \"No other success would count whether you were a man or a woman. So I thought to myself why take the risk of getting older and never being able to have children,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sobhy had the procedure done at a private fertility centre where her friend and gynaecologist Mona Abouel Ghar was overseeing the programme.\u003cbr/\u003e              At the time, the cost of the procedure ranged from 1,500 to 2,300 US Dollars. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to Abouel Ghar, a professor of gynaecology at Cairo University's medical school, oocyte freezing was first introduced worldwide nearly a decade ago but has only been available in Egypt for the last five years.\u003cbr/\u003e              Cancer patients are the most likely to use this technology to pre-empt the damage chemotherapy can inflict on the reproductive organs, according to Abouel Ghar. \u003cbr/\u003e              However, she says a new group of women are now showing interest in the technology:\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In the last two years, it has become very common among still unmarried women to freeze their eggs,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They are either women who never got married or divorcees with no kids. They are worried that they might get old before conceiving.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Abouel Ghar says there is no expiry date for frozen eggs. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"This is a great advantage because a woman can freeze her eggs when she is in her early thirties and not use them in order to get pregnant until she is in her late thirties or early forties. The more eggs we freeze, the better results we have,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Abouel Ghar adds that even a woman who has reached her menopause could still use her frozen eggs to get pregnant because the probability of pregnancy depends on the woman's age at the time the egg was extracted from her ovaries. In such a case, the uterus could be easily prepared to host the embryo. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to the official 2017 census, Egypt has a total of nearly 13.7 million adults who have never married, including 8.9 million males and 4.7 million females. \u003cbr/\u003e              Staying unmarried has become particularly common among urban, highly educated females.\u003cbr/\u003e              Psychotherapist Olfat Allam says she has visits from many unmarried women torn between their desire to freeze their eggs and family pressures to conform to social norms. \u003cbr/\u003e              She says they were usually well-educated, career-driven women in their mid or late thirties. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Many mothers come to my clinic and they are having fierce arguments with their unmarried daughters who want to store their eggs so that they can get pregnant when the time is right. However, their mothers are against this because freezing eggs gives their daughters the chance to postpone their marriage. Mothers want their daughters to follow the typical path: finish college, find a suitor, get married and have children. Nowadays, girls do not want to follow such a conventional path.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              For Sohby the egg freezing process has given her time, reassurance and options.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The oocyte freezing makes a woman stand on solid ground. It relieves her from the pressure of accepting any suitor or getting into a relationship that she knows won't hold,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sohby was married for six months when she was in her late twenties.
