If we cut through the quick or into the quick, then there is some pain associated with that, but we try and avoid that on every single rhino."
Although painless, the task is not without risk.
"We did 6 rhino with this drug combination, they all went down in around about 3 and a half to 4 minutes when we darted them, we didn't have any complications with the drugs, we had a slight hick-up with the very dense bush here, with the cow and the calf separating from each other quite far apart, which made logistically a particularly difficult situation," adds Toft.
KwaZulu-Natal province lost more than 200 rhino in 2017, compared to 162 rhino in 2016, according to Project Rhino.
This region of South Africa boasts the most genetically diverse range of black and white rhino, and also the second biggest rhino population in the country.
Chris Gallers, a coordinator for Project Rhino, explains the thinking behind dehorning.
"There is always speculation in terms of the value of rhino horn on the black market, and we know that the price seems to be very high, so if a poacher is going to take the risk for a small piece of horn that means obviously the incentive is there for them to do it, and I think that one of the big challenges now is to understand that better, as to what is that market doing, and what is the incentive even with that little bit of remaining horn. In terms of the rhino, we dehorn them and try reduce it as much as we can, evening shaping the horns to take off all the edges and any valuable part that we can, and the challenge is, yes, it does grow back, it's like a fingernail, it just grows back, and we are looking at 2 to 3 inches a year it can grow back, and over a broad base that can add up to a significant amount in terms of the weight."
An international ban on rhino horn has been in place since 1977. But poaching continues, and an increasing number of the rhinos survive the attacks and need treatment for gunshot wounds or deep cuts from axes or machetes.
Record numbers of rhinos have been killed in South Africa in recent years to meet demand for their horns in parts of Asia, particularly Vietnam. Some people believe rhino horn, when ground into powder, has medicinal benefits, but there is no scientific evidence to support that.
Although rhinos use their horns to access food and in social engagements, de-horning them has not been shown to be detrimental, the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) conservation group has said. Analysis from reserves in Zimbabwe has shown it to increase survival rates.
However, as the horn grows back, the process must be repeated every year or two. De-horning a single rhino can cost more than $1,200.
